Everyday Cloth
Cloth-Making
“Everyday Cloth” explores the practice and functionality of cloth-making, using two traditional quilting blocks; the Courtyard Steps and Logcabin. Each block is treated as an independent composition, exploring color, texture, pattern & negative space.
The seeds of this piece began in March 2019, when I attended a quilting workshop in Mississippi, led by two women from the Gees Bend Collective in Alabama. The Gees Bend process of quiltmaking is largely improvisational; an important philosophy governing composition and design choices.
Each 18” block of “Everyday Cloth” is comprised of entirely repurposed fabric sourced from my workplace, fabric stores in the NYC Garment District, personal printed & woven pieces, cloth from friends, colleagues and the quilting workshop.
Exhibited as part of the Matter Exhibition, October 18-20 2019, Brooklyn, NYC.
Material: pieced & quilted repurposed fabrics (linen, cotton, faux shearling, faux fur, lame, silk, personal woven & printed pieces).
Dimensions: 85” w x 100” l
